REMINDER: IN Short Deadline 7/24

by Mike Anton

Hello internet, pleasure to see you again. I'm writing to make a very exciting announcement for The Inclusive, the first in a new series of moves to expand the scope and breadth of this here website beyond the mere re-design that we have coming down the pike.

The week of July 30th - August 3rd, The Inclusive will host "IN Short," our first-annual Lit Week. It will feature works of short fiction from a wide variety of writers on our site, from cartoonists to sports columnists and whatever the hell I'm supposed to write about. But to merely keep this celebration wholly to our staff wouldn't be very inclusive, now would it?

So that's why I'm asking you, dear readers, to submit work yourself. Is there a piece that's made the rounds and is collecting dust in your desk (physical or digital)? Feel like you need motivation to get back into the fiction game? Have a story ready to burst out of you a la Alien but don't know where to put it once it scampers out? Then we might have the space for you.

Do you have the ambition but don't know what to do about it because you've never written a short story before? Well, fret not. They can be about anything. A funny encounter you wish you had, a desperately dispiriting tale about orphan homeless lesbian nine-year-olds, the shenanigans that occurred when your toy teddy bear came to life! (Actually, scratch that last one - that sounds like shit).

Every short will be around 600-1300 words long, with a cap on 3,000, because no one likes a long-winded short story. Like a 28-minute long short film, it just defeats the purpose, and makes the description sound like a lie. Let's not make conventions lie.

The deadline for submitting pieces is July 24th. Please direct all submissions to our Humor writer Sarah Shanfield who is spearheading this expedition into lit world. Her email is shan [at] theinclusive.net. Put "IN Short" in the subject line, because it's just a helpful thing to do. The best works submitted will be featured in our week-long bonanza running from July 30th through August 3rd.

If you're interested, feel free to contact us with any questions or other inquiries. This is not a contest, there will be no cash prize, nor will we ever ask you for money upon submission. That's some dirty shit.

Come with your best work and we'll try to match it on our end. Hopefully, when all's said and done, we'll have a captivating week of material from which we can all enjoy.
